As part of one鈥檚 IRB proposal, one must complete a formal human participants research ethics training. The 61传媒IRB will accept previously completed CITI training, if the training completed was the Social/Behavioral /Educational Researcher Comprehensive (sometimes referred to Social/Behavioral Research Basic/Refresher) course and it is up to date. Simply submit your training completion report, which shows the modules you completed and alongside your quiz scores. Please note that the Responsible Conduct for Research course wll not be sufficient for human participants ethics training.
NOTE: If you completed CITI training through another institution, you may have completed what you need. However, we will need to check the modules completed (as shown on your completion report) before we can say for sure. So, please send us your CITI training completion report and we can let you know whether you have satisfied the requirements for this assignment.
If you have not yet completed a human participants research ethics training or your ethics training certification is out of date, please follow the steps below to complete an appropriate ethics training:
- If you are new to the CITI Program, please go to and click 鈥淩egister鈥� at the top right-hand side of the page. If you have an existing account, you can add an additional institutional affiliation by signing into CITI and selecting 鈥淎dd Affiliation鈥� under 鈥淚nstitutional Courses.鈥�
- On the next page, click on 鈥淟og-In Through My Institution鈥� and click 鈥漌.M. Keck Science Department of Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and 61传媒s鈥� as your organization affiliation. Please note that this is the subscriber organization for all researchers from Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and 61传媒.
- Read & agree to Terms of Service and Privacy Policy statements and affirm that you are an affiliate of W.M. Keck Science Department of Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and 61传媒s.
- Select 鈥淐ontinue to create your CITI program username/Password鈥�
- Complete the required information as requested, using your personal information, including your 61传媒email address. When asked 鈥淎re you interested in the option of receiving Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credit for completed CITI Program courses?鈥� you can select 鈥渘o鈥�, unless you need the CEU credit for some other purpose.
- Select your role in research as researcher. NOTE: We have heard the options for this step may have changed. Students, select the option closest to 鈥渦ndergraduate researcher鈥�. Staff or faculty should select the closest option to staff or faculty researcher.
- On the 鈥淪elect curriculum鈥� page, select 鈥淗uman Subjects Research鈥� and 鈥淪ocial-Behavioral-Educational (SBE) Comprehensive鈥� for learner group. If you are conducting research with clinical biomedical populations, you should also complete the appropriate Health Information Privacy and Security (HIPS) course. NOTE: You do not need to complete the Responsible Conduct for Research question.
- Click 鈥渇inalize registration.”

- Click 鈥淪how courses for 鈥淲.M. Keck Science Department of Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and 61传媒s鈥�.
- Select 鈥淪ocial-Behavioral-Educational (SBE) Comprehensive鈥� from the course menu and complete the basic training. If you are conducting research with clinical biomedical populations, you should also complete the appropriate Health Information Privacy and Security (HIPS) course. If you are conducting with vulnerable populations, you may also be required to complete relevant modules related to those groups.
All of the CITI program online course modules are self-paced and may be interrupted and resumed. You must pass the training with a score of 80% or higher. Training time varies depending on your prior preparation and other factors, usually entailing up to nine hours. There is no cost to Scripps-affiliated applicants for use of this site.
Once you have completed the CITI training, please submit your completion report, which shows all of the modules you completed as well as your quiz scores (not the completion certificate).
